‘Star Trek’ Enlists Jason Isaacs as Discovery Captain

CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery has added a captain to its ranks.

The new CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery continues to progress, as evidenced by the announcement that Jason Isaacs has signed on to star as captain of the Discovery on the upcoming series. The show will feature the Enterprise, now renamed the USS Discovery and introduces a new cast of characters on the same kind of mission of discovery and exploration which characterized the original 1966 series.

Jason Isaacs is Captain Lorca

Jason Isaacs, known to TV viewers from the NBC series Awake and the USA Network’s Dig, will portray Captain Lorca, captain of the Discovery. Isaacs joins a cast which includes Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead), who plays lieutenant commander Rainsford, Doug Jones as Saru and Anthony Rapp as Stamets, the ship’s science officers, James Frain as Sarek, the father of Spock and an astrophysicist, Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock) as chief medical officer Nambue, Sam Vatholomeos as junior officer Connor and Terry Serpico as Admiral Anderson. Also slated to appear as recurring characters are Michelle Yeoh as Georgiu, captain of the USS Shenzou, Shazad Latif as Kol, a Klingon commanding officer; and Mary Chieffo as L’Rell and Chris Obi as T’Kvuma, Klingon leaders.

Originally scheduled to begin airing in January, it was delayed and then delayed again to May. Les Moonves, CEO of CBS Corp. has mentioned that the series’ long road to a premiere may be a little longer still, saying that it will probably debut in the late summer or early fall. Part of the delay may be due to the departure of showrunner Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal); slated to take over are Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, both longtime collaborators of Fuller’s.

The show will be executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Bryan Fuller (through Living Dead Guy Productions), Rod Rodenberry, Trevor Roth and Akiva Goldsmith.

Jason Isaacs is a well-known actor whose credits include the Harry Potter film franchise, Death of a Stain, Hotel Mumbai and The OA on Netflix as well as numerous television appearances.
