What do Stormtroopers have to do with Apple’s new wireless headphones?

What do Stormtroopers have to do with Apple’s new wireless headphones? More than you might think, it turns out. The new wireless headphones’ design was inspired in part by the Galactic Empire’s army, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article on Jony Ive, Apple’s design chief.

J.J. Abrams, director of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” says that Ive mentioned to him that when he designed the new earbuds, he was thinking of the original Stormtrooper armor from the early Star Wars films. However, Ive’s connections to the Empire run deeper than mere headphones. Abrams called on Ive to help him reimagine the iconic Jedi weapon the lightsaber for the film.

It goes both ways. According to TechCrunch:

Apple design lead Jony Ive told Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams that he was thinking of Stormtrooper garb when he came up with the design for Apple’s earbuds, according to The Wall Street Journal. But the inspiration works both ways: Abrams took cues from Jony Ive for the unique design of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, which has a rougher blade projection that occasionally flickers off sparks, something the director said was a direct suggestion from Apple’s design guru.
