Star Trek Beyond: The Soundtrack

Varese Sarabande has announced the release of Star Trek Beyond – The Deluxe Edition via their CD Club. This 5000 unit limited release features two CDs of music composed for the film by Michael Giacchino, who is also known for his work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Doctor Strange and Zootopia. The standard version of the soundtrack has also been released on vinyl.

The release coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek TV series and offers fans more than two hours of Giacchino’s acclaimed score for Star Trek Beyond. The composer describes the film as reminiscent of the original series, but on a larger scale. Giacchino added,  “It’s been a chance to create a new musical landscape for the film that reflects both hope and exploration.”

The latest film in the popular Star Trek film franchise, Star Trek Beyond was directed by Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious), taking over for creator Gene Rodenberry and J.J. Abrams, who directed the reboot of the film series. As you’d expect, the film features the crew of the USS Enterprise on their five year mission to explore uncharted regions of space. On this journey, they run into a new threat which threatens not only the Enterprise and its crew, but the entire Federation.

Giacchino has a truly impressive resume which includes music for some of the biggest box office hits of the modern era. His credits include Ratatouille, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Jurassic World, Inside Out, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Incredibles, to name just a few. His score for UP won him not only an Oscar, but also a BAFTA, Golden Globe, two Grammies and the Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Award.

The composer got off to an early start, dabbling in film as a child in Edgewater Park, NJ and later studying filmmaking at New York’s School of Visual Arts. After landing a position at Disney, he studies composition at Julliard and UCLA; he then began composing music for video games at Disney and then the interactive division of DreamWorks.

It was at DreamWorks where Giacchino was tasked by Steven Spielberg with composing a score for the video game The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which became the first PlayStation game with an orchestral score.  The composer’s video game work got the attention of J.J. Abrams, who hired him to compose for the TV series Lost and Alias, along with a string of feature films.

Giacchino has also worked on music for Space Mountain and Star Tours (in collaboration with John Williams) as well as Disneyland Paris’ Ratatouille ride. He has also worked as musical director for the Academy Awards and had his film scores performed in concert halls worldwide. Star Trek Beyond is the third score Giacchino has scored for the Star Trek franchise. In addition to his many film projects, the composer also currently serves as Governor of the Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is on the advisory board of Education Through Music Los Angeles.
